Foods For Healthier Hair

Foods For Healthier Hair

Many are seeking ways to prevent hair loss. The truth is, our hair changes as we age. As we get older we lose more hair and we tend to begin noticing it more and more. It's normal to lose at least 100 hairs each and every day. Over the course of a year, this can really add up.

Protecting your hair through a healthy diet is a great start to help prevent hair loss. Maybe there is some truth to the old adage "you are what you eat". Eat more of these foods to help keep your healthy head of hair.

Walnuts
A healthy diet with some walnuts in it will help improve your locks. Walnuts contain an oil that helps hair growth. But beware, if you eat too many you're hair will have too much of a healthy thing and look dull and oily.

Popeye Had It Right
Eat your spinach. A diet deficient in iron is another cause for hair loss. Rich in minerals and vitamins, spinach will help to keep your hair follicles healthy and strong.

Eat For The Halibut
Halibut is rich in magnesium which can help prevent hair loss. Many other kinds of fish also have an abundance of magnesium so eat up.

Carrots
Not only healthy for your eyesight, this tuber vegetable is rich in Vitamin A which can strengthen your hair. Have you ever wondered how models get those gorgeous locks of hair? They eat a diet laden in healthy foods that will benefit their entire bodies including their hair.

Bok Choy
When a dermatologist looks at hair loss, they also check your ferritin levels. Ferritin levels will detect good levels of iron and healthy hair. Rich in iron, bok choy is an ideal vegetable for healthy hair. So go ahead and make that favorite salad of yours. Try using some bok choy along with the spinach for a unique flavor treat and for a healthier head.
Greek Yogurt

For all you yogurt fans out there, Greek yogurt packs a powerful dose of Vitamin B5 and Vitamin D. Both of these vitamins are important for healthy hair and follicles. Try topping your green yogurt with some walnuts or granola for a healthy start to the day.

Eggs
Eggs are another great source for Vitamin D. No matter how you like your eggs, if you try to eat one per day you'll have healthier hair. Try a morning omelet with some spinach, bok choy and perhaps a few walnuts across the top. Combining these healthy foods will benefit your overall well being.

Making healthy dietary choices as we age can not only prevent diseases and medical conditions, it can also strengthen our hair and our bodies. These choices are simple to make. While we are out shopping for food we can simply choose to buy more of the healthier alternatives in lieu of the junk food that's so readily available. Our food choices can benefit us for many years to come

Medicinal Uses of Amla

what are the uses of amla

Liver Health

Caldecott notes amla's longstanding use as a liver-supporting botanical medicine. Traditionally, it has been used as a treatment for jaundice and hepatitis. In April 2004, the medical journal "Nutrition Research" published the results of an animal study that confirmed that amla can protect rats from the effects of dimethyl hydrazine, a potent liver toxin.

Antioxidant

Amla fruit is a potent source of vitamin C and other naturally occurring antioxidants. Antioxidant compounds can help to protect DNA from the damage associated with free radicals-- highly reactive compounds linked to cancer, organ damage and death. "Nutrition Research" found that rats taking amla experience less oxidative damage than expected when they are exposed to toxins.

Hair Health

Ayurvedic practitioners associate amla with hair health. For this reason, it is frequently used as a component in over-the-counter herbal formulas for hair health. No studies have evaluated the efficacy of amla as a treatment for hair loss, premature graying or poor hair growth.

Immune Health

Traditional Ayurvedic medicine regards amla as a useful intervention for colds, fevers and influenza. Few studies have investigated amla's efficacy as a treatment for infections, but Todd Caldecott reports that it can boost immunity in animals with cancer and demonstrates antiviral effects in laboratory environments.

Digestive Health

According to Todd Caldecott, a clinical herbalist who specializes in Ayurvedic medicine, amla is an effective treatment for indigestion, gas, constipation, hemorrhoids and poor appetite.

Blood Health

Caldecott notes amla's traditional Ayurvedic use as a treatment for bleeding disorders and anemia. Amla may also help to mitigate the effects of menorrhagia, a condition marked by heavy, prolonged menstrual periods.

Is Amla Good For Hair?

What is Amla powder and what does it do for hair?
The Right Brain replies:
Amla, also known as Indian gooseberry, is a fruit from the myrobalan-tree which is native to India and Burma. Like its cousin the North American gooseberry, amla fruit is edible with tart citrusy flavor. Amla is allegedly high in ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and tannins which give it high antioxidant strength. Amla also contains flavonoids, kaempferol, ellagic acid and gallic acid.
Preliminary medical research has shown Amla potentially provides a surprising variety of benefits including antiviral and antimicrobial properties; prevention of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis, activity against some cancers; reduced severity of acute pancreatitis, age-related renal disease, and diabetes; and reduction of blood cholesterol levels. Not bad, eh?
Is Amla good for hair?
It’s popularly believed that amla fruit is good for hair when applied as a conditioner. A quick search reveals claims about nourishing hair and scalp, adding texture and volume to hair, and preventing premature grey hair. Does amla really deliver against any of these claims?

“Nourishing” claims are fairly ambiguous and are therefore easy to support. Any material that provides a conditioning effect can be said to be nourishing, so it’s likely that amla does have some benefit in this regard. Texturizing may be one area where amla really delivers, provided it’s left in your hair. There are a number of anecdotal stories of these benefits.
The grey hair claims may come from the fact that amla is used in inks and fabric dyes to help “fix” the dye in place. Unfortunately, hair dyes work by a different chemistry than fabric dyes and we can find no reference to in the cosmetic science literature to indicate that amla has any effect on hair color what so ever.
Interesting bonus fact: In Punjabi, amla is called olay, as in “Oil of Olay” beauty products from Proctor and Gamble. Is this coincidence, or sinister design?
What about Amla Oil?
While Celeste didn’t specifically ask about it, amla fruit is also available in oil form. We would be very cautious about purchasing this version because in several of the products we reviewed the so called “amla oil” was really just amla extract diluted down in mineral and canola oil. You’re better off with the concentrated powder.
The Beauty Brains bottom line
While some of the claims are outlandish, you may perceive some basic conditioning and texturizing benefits from applying amla powder to your hair. We’d expect this to be true of leave in applications and wouldn’t expect to see any difference when it’s rinsed out.
Ladies, have you tried amla in your regimen? How does it work for your hair?

How to Use Amla (Indian Gooseberry ) For Thick, Shiny, Healthy Hair

Amla (Indian gooseberry) is the common name for an herb used in the traditional Indian health-care system know as Ayurveda. Traditional South Asian cultures use amla as a hair tonic and as an additive to hair oils and hair-care preparations. You also can take amla fruit and amla extract as a dietary supplement for general skin and hair health. Scientific studies show that amla has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that can help maintain healthy hair. Other studies conclude that topically applied amla has exfoliating and anti-bacterial properties and may help maintain a healthy scalp and promote hair growth.

1
Mix about 1/2 cup of pure amla (Indian gooseberry) powder with enough warm water to make a paste. The paste should be about as thick as a cup of stirred yogurt. Let the mixture stand for 10 to 15 minutes.

  • 2
Apply the paste to dry, clean hair using your hands (rubber gloves are recommended but not absolutely necessary; amla does not stain), starting close to your scalp and working toward the ends of your hair. Be gentle and do not rub the mixture into your scalp.
  • 3
Let the paste sit on your head, uncovered, for three to five minutes. The amla mixture should be thick enough that it doesn't drip. Rinse the paste out with lukewarm water. Do not apply your regular conditioner or shampoo for a few hours.
  • 4
Treat your hair with the amla powder mixture about once every two weeks. Between treatments, try using a shampoo and conditioner containing amla. You also can use amla oil on your hair between treatments for extra shine and softness.

  •

    Indian Goosberry Fruit
